Hi Families! Thank you for coming to Open House! The kiddos were so excited to show off their classroom! Attached is the PowerPoint presentation that was shared. Feel free to download and review. It is a recap of the information shared, and of course, all the things I forgot to tell you!
Cps sick policy
CPS sick policy states that students who have a fever must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. This also pertains to students who are sent home from school sick with a fever. They must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. Please be respectful of this policy as we are trying to keep every student (and teacher) as healthy as possible.
Parent Portal:
Parent portal information will be sent home this week. You can view your child's grades, assignments and attendance online. First grade students receive report card grades A, B, C, D, or F for Reading, Math, Writing, Listening, Social Studies, Science, Art, Music, Library and Gym. CPS is developing a new site that will be available in January called ASPEN. It will be the new parent portal site. I will give you information when it is available and the new login information is available.
Reading instruction:
Reading instruction will take place in our homeroom, however, students will be placed in reading groups and instruction will be based on their reading level. Reading passages/ sight words will be different where phonics, comprehension and writing will be the same for the entire class.
Spelling test will take place and words will be based on our phonics instruction. Spelling practice will take place in classroom. The goal is to complete this at school to minimize homework time and maximize your family time. Spelling words will not be sent home unless requested. This process has been a great success in the years past. If your child is struggling with the test, I will send the words home. Otherwise, instruction and spelling practice will take part here at school.
Homework Policy:
Reading homework is typically assigned on Mondays and is due the following Monday. CPS homework policy calls for 30 minutes or less for first grade students. Math homework will be assigned as soon as walking math class begins and will be assigned daily and will most likely be longer than the reading homework. If you are wanting more practice I can always recommend a workbook you can purchase and do on your own time. Also, students are always welcome to complete extra book reports. We will soon have online computer programs (I Ready, xtra math) available where children can practice reading and math skills at home on a computer.
Novel Study: Charlotte's Web
We started our first novel study! We are reading Charlotte's Web and the class LOVES it so far! When we complete the book, we will have a Charlotte's Web Celebration day where we will watch the movie. Do me a favor?! Do not have your child watch the movie until we are done. I realize many have seen it before, but it's always so fun to watch it together on our celebration day. Thank you! We will be watiching the cartoon classic from 1973! It’s one of my most favorite days of the school year!
This read aloud will help build many reading comprehension skills including identifying character traits, summarizing, visualization, theme, problem/solution and cause and effect, and plot.
